ZZNotify NLM Demo An MHS Enhancement from Scott Wertz
ZZNotify is a fairly simple program with a fairly simple purpose:
it notifies users when they have mail messages waiting in their
MHS mailbox. It's designed so that you can specify how often you
wish to be reminded of waiting mail; the notification interval
can be as long or as short as you like, and is specified in hours,
minutes, and seconds as HH:MM:SS. When that time interval has
elapsed, ZZNotify goes through the entire list of users defined
at this host, and uses Novell's broadcast ("Send") messages to
remind them that they have not read their mail, and then it begins
counting down to the next time interval. If the administrator
has a need to send notifications to users other than the owner
of a mailbox, or to a user who has a different login name than
their mailbox name, ZZNotify has an alias feature to do so.
This is often used to notify the network administrator when the
mail administrator ADMIN has mail waiting. Normally, a typical
notification looks like "You have 4 mail messages waiting"; for
aliases the message would be something like "User SUPERVISOR has
3 mail messages waiting".
This is a fully functional demo version of ZZNotify. It will
function exactly like the real thing, but it will only cycle
200 times and then stop. If you set a notification interval
of 30 minutes, then you'll have roughly 4 days to try it out,
or you could set it for every 24 hours and run for months! <g>
You are free to use and distribute this program as long as
you're not making a profit from it.
The registered version costs US $25 per file server. A single
copy will not run on multiple servers. See below for ordering
information.
MHS 1.x users might be interested to know that there is also a
gateway version of ZZNotify. Like this NLM version, the gateway
edition is available in the libraries of the NOVUSER forum on
Compuserve.
INSTALLING ZZNOTIFY
- - - - - - - - - -
PLEASE NOTE: This demo version of ZZNotify will run on NetWare 3.11
(or higher) out of the box. The registered version, however,
requires CLIB v3.12 or later.
1) Copy ZZNOTIFY.NLM into your SYS:SYSTEM directory.
2) Load it at the console screen. ZZNotify requires at least
one command-line parameter, and that is the time interval
between notifications, specified as HH:MM:SS, or any shorthand
equivalent:
LOAD ZZNOTIFY 24:00:00 = every 24 hours
LOAD ZZNOTIFY 30:00 = every 30 minutes
LOAD ZZNOTIFY 30 = every 30 seconds
(NOT recommended!)
3) If you load it as shown in the examples above, the program
assumes that your MHS mailboxes are installed in the default
location (under SYS:MHS\MAIL\USERS\....). If you have placed
them in a different location, you must also specify where
they are.
ZZNotify wants the path to your MHS installation; it assumes
a path of SYS:. But if your mailboxes are installed under
VOL2:PROGRAMS\MHS\MAIL\USERS\..., then you would load:
LOAD ZZNOTIFY 30:00 VOL2:PROGRAMS
4) To setup up aliases, you must create alias files. For example,
if you want users ADMIN, SUPERVISOR, and FRED to be notified
whenever ADMIN has mail waiting, you would create a file in
ADMIN's mailbox called ALIASES that contains a line for each
alias. In other words, the contents of the file
\MHS\MAIL\USERS\ADMIN\ALIASES would look like this:
ADMIN
SUPERVISOR
FRED
